Toyger tabby cat: there is a breed called the Toyger which has a very distinct type of tabby coat. They were specifically bred to look like spotted wild cats as a way to make people think twice before purchasing fur coats made. The California Spangled cat was bred in California in the 1980s with a mix of breeds, including the Manx, Siamese, American Shorthair, Abyssinian, British Shorthair, Angora, and street cats from Egypt and Malaysia. Eventually there was enough success in the breeding programs and the CFA advanced the Colourpoints to championship status in 1964. Siameses were crossed with red tabby cats as well as Abyssinians before being backcrossed to Siamese again. In the 1940s -1950s, breeders in the United Kingdom and USA began a concerted effort to create a new breed. The goal for the Colourpoint cat breed was to produce cats that were Siamese in body shape but showed a wider variety of colours than the traditional Siamese colours (Chocolate, Lilac, Blue, Seal). The Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) is the only major registry to accept the Colourpoint as its own breed. Due to the special way coat color is inherited about three-quarters of orange and white cats are male. All orange and white cats have tabby markings in their orange fur, even if they’re too subtle to make out. Colourpoint cats are closely related to the Siamese and Oriental cat breeds with many organisations not even acknowledging the Colourpoint as a standalone breed. An orange and white cat carries the genes for red coat pigment (pheomelanin) and white spotting. ![]()
